A Note on Reputation
My father ran an auto repair shop in a small Georgia town. In a place like that, your reputation arrives before you do. People knew whether he did honest work long before they ever met him, because someone down the road had already told them.
I used to think that was a small-town thing. Something you leave behind when you move to bigger places with more anonymity and more room to reinvent yourself.
I was wrong. The internet turned the whole world into a small town. Your reputation still arrives before you do. It is just distributed differently now, through searches and screenshots and the quiet way people ask around before they say yes to you.
Character is the strange part of preparedness. It is the one thing no one can watch you build, and the one thing everyone eventually sees. It compounds silently for years, and then, at the moment you least expect it, it walks into the room ahead of you and starts the conversation.
